Welcome to my Blog!

Hello everyone and welcome to the launch of my blog, Cop Art.  My name is Sharon and I am a forensic artist, working as a freelance illustrator and sketch artist for police departments, security companies and detective agencies, families. My posts will contain useful information for those interested in art and illustration, news on law enforcement and forensic issues, examples of my new work and of course, my personal opinions and questions for discussion.

My first question to you is "doing it yourself" becoming a lost art?

With the advent of so many new technologies in computer programming have we all come to rely too much on our software programs to do what we can do ourselves, and sometimes much better...by ourselves?  Have you ever thought that instead of sending an email to your friends and family, just actually sit down and physically write a note or letter instead of an instant message?  Might it not have more meaning to them to receive such a note or letter?

Instead of becoming a computer graphics artist, why not try it by yourself and become a "real" artist ......sketch, paint, draw and show your real talent.  In my opinion it's so much more rewarding and fulfulling as an artist.  Let your ideas flow through your hands and fingers to a pencil or a paintbrush instead of the keys of your computer!

    Ms. Blanchard:

Great question. Thanks for bringing this up.

Yes, doing it yourself is fast becoming a lost art in our society. Fortunately not for me. I document 'incident sites' through photography and diagrams. I consider myself a Photographer. I cannot document a site and go back to the office and download and 'enhance' my images and make pretty pictures for my clients at the computer--they will never make it into a courtroom. This forces me to stay on top of my profession and use my brain and experience in capturing the images my clients need at the site, not at the computer.

Therein lies my biggest problem. Almost everybody/department has a point and shoot digital camera, including insurance adjusters, risk management departments, etc. Most don't realize what it can take to get an image allowed into evidence in court. They point, click, download, enhance as needed and forward onto other departments/personnel. No SOP on handling evidence, no concern for the 'original images' they downloaded, only the enhanced images. You don't have to know how to capture an image, just how to use photo enhancing software.

Almost everything for my business is done with computer now. Very little face time. Too bad, I made alot of friends discussing matters over coffee or lunch.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now. But thanks for asking.

Sharon, Congrats on your new blog!

When I receive an actual card and handwritten note or letter, I feel the recipient's gratitude or whatever sentiment they are trying to convey, on a much deeper level. Keeping this in mind, I am trying to make much more of an effort to personalize my communications, especially to those who mean so much. During these challenging economic times, I think it is worth taking the time to let someone know you care and are thinking of them.
